Serving the Community

St Leonard’s Church is one of 7 churches in the Swan Team Ministry serving the local community offering:

A Friendly Community

We offer a special welcome to newcomers to join our community life, not just on Sundays.  We regularly hold friendship lunches and other social events to which all are welcome to come and share. There are occasional discussion groups, courses, and other opportunities for people to explore their faith.

A Caring Community

Our Church reaches out to those in our community who are lonely, bereaved, sick or dying. We also visit the local home for the elderly in the village. Training is provided to help and support our team of church visitors.   We produce a monthly magazine called “Life Together” which is distributed free to every home.  All this helps to keep people in touch with their local community.

A Church Building for the Community

The church building is normally open each day and provides a place where one can find peace and quietness. It has been a place of worship and prayer for over 800 years and we do our best to maintain it for use each day by visitors and for future generations. We are currently planning to add a kitchen and toilet facilities. The churchyard is kept in good order as a beautiful place of rest for the departed.

A Community for All Ages

We have just introduced our new monthly Friends and Family Service, a family friendly service suitable for all ages. The Bears’ Club Service (see below) is especially for pre-school children and their carers.  We run a flourishing Junior Youth Club for children aged 7 – 11 years with over thirty members, usually meeting every two weeks.   An outing is arranged each school term.   Various social events are organised either for different age groups or for people of all ages to meet and enjoy their time together.

A Praying Community

Each week our church congregation prays for people who are in need, by name if requested.   We also remember those who have recently died or whose anniversary is due.
We invite parishioners to have the names of those who have died recorded in a special Book of Remembrance which is kept on view each day in the church. We also hold an annual Memorial Service for those who have been bereaved to remember loved ones.

A Celebrating Community

We regularly celebrate baptism of babies and children, welcoming them into the family of the church, either within the main service or at a separate service.
St Leonard’s Church provides a beautiful and spiritual setting for weddings. We also offer services of thanksgiving for marriage, often enabling couples to renew their vows on the occasion of an anniversary.
Funerals celebrate the life and work of those who have died.

Bears' Club Services

These mid-weeek services are intended for Mums, Dads or Carers who have pre-school children, whether they are new born baby in a pram or nearly ready for school, and would like the opportunity of sharing an informal time of worship.    We share stories from the bible and sing songs (many with actions) together.  We meet at 2.15pm with refreshments afterwards and normally finish by 3pm.  Next dates:

** Annual Service: Thursday 14th August.  12 noon at St Mary's Church Marsh Gibbon followed by a Picnic in the Rectory Garden
